AceHardware.com Adirondack Chair Review

I haven’t shopped at Ace Hardware much before.  That was, until they started having those FREE Paint coupons a few months ago.  We love their new paint line, so we decided to try out some of their other products and we’ve been pleasantly surprised!

We needed some new Adirondack Chairs for the Ski Lodge and had priced them at several stores.  I found the prices ranging from $79 to $119 to be way over my budget if we were going to buy 10 of them.  Yes, 10.  The Lodge has 2 wrap around porches that are the perfect gathering place for afternoon cocktails and cookouts.

We decided to put 5 or 6 chairs on each deck, so I really needed to find the best price on them as possible.  I was so excited when I saw that ACE Hardware has them for just $29.99 !! (Keep reading to save even more with an Ace Hardware coupon below)

Tips and Tricks to Trace your Ancestry with Vintage Maps and the Census

Genealogy: Where do I start?

In recent years I have become interested in the genealogy of my family. Now that I have no “roots” back in New Jersey, it makes me sad that centuries of my family have lived in the same general area and I’m not there.  Not that I want to live there… just that I want the warmth of living in a place where “everybody knows your name” and “everybody knows where you came from”.  Luckily there are many new tools on the internet to help track down your Family Tree like never before.

We’ve all seen the commercials for ancestry.com but what else is out there?  Undeniably, they have the worlds largest collection of family history, and photos.  That is definately where I started.  I’m very frugal, but they do have Free 14 day trials that you can get accomplish a lot of research.  You can also reach out to others in your family tree that have already done alot of discovery.  They can give you access to their family tree.  If they do that, you don’t have to pay for that information.

1940 Census: Tips for Finding Your Family

The 1940 United States Federal Census was just made public and can be found on several different genealogy sites.  All of the sites have different states indexed so far, so don’t just limit yourself to one site.  For instance, you can get 100% free access to 1940 census collection at Family Search.org .  Want to get involved in helping get the files indexed so that everyone can search by name or city? They are seeking volunteers, they would love your help!

Vintage Maps and Photos

Census Records tell stories that may not be known about your family history.  So do Vintage Maps and photos.  When I was very young my Mother bought a Vintage Map of 1862 of Cumberland County NJ.  This is where we grew up.  The Map of course is Pre-Civil war and was printed by antique map maker A. Pomeroy of Philadelphia.  My mother had it mounted 30 years ago and it has hung on our wall ever since.  I have no idea what archival method was used, if any, so it is difficult to get a good photo of it.  It stands about 5 feet x 5 feet.

Disregard the paint swatches on the wall, we are doing a little remodeling :)   I’m lucky that Read More→

Happy Easter from my Mantel to yours

Happy Easter 2012

Decorating my Mantel

Is it Mantel or Mantle?  I never can remember and quite frankly I really don’t care.  I’m going with Mantel for everything I write here.  Why? because I can.  It’s my blog and I’ll spell things right or wrong if I want to.  With that being said, I also decorate wrong mostly.  I’m trying harder these days to study the latest interior design trends and decorating magazines.

Vintage Easter decorations

Vintage Quilts

I keep coming back to my vintage ways.  Every way I turn, I have vintage.

Me, for instance…very vintage.

I took a few of my treasured memories and made up this Easter Mantel.  I featured the spring Tiffany Blue colors of my Great Grandmother’s Victorian blue lamp and paired it with the back of one of my mother’s quilted wallhangings.  I couldn’t find any quilts of hers that were the perfect color for Easter so I turned one over and there it was !  So, if you have old quilts don’t forget to look at the back too.  I have it draped over a quilt chest that she also painted.  I’ve been tempted to cover up those roses because they really aren’t my style, but I’m afraid if I do I’ll regret it someday.  I can’t bring her back to paint something new, and I have no intentions of learning any new hidden talents of my own, so thus the roses remain.

Vintage Signs

The Somerset sandblasted sign is really kinda crazy.  I went to an estate sale one day, and there was this sign sitting behind a table and it said “The Petersons” on it.  You can see it on this picture but it is there.  My house is not named Somerset, nor do we sail, but my name is PETERSON !  So $8 later and the rustic beauty was mine. This qualifies as a HOT DEAL right? I do love the colors in it and we move it from place to place in our home thru the year.

Vintage Candy Molds

The Chocolate Egg and Bunny molds were my mother’s.  I had them in the bottom of a corner cabinet and they hardly ever come out to play.  They only have one half so I can’t use them to make Chocolate treats, but the silver hue is just dynamic when the sun hits them.  I’m sure my mother bought them at some auction since the other halves are not in my cabinet.  Decorators would have separated them to maximize selling each half.

Vintage Ephemera

What is Ephemera you ask?  I always thought it was “old paper”.  Apparently I’m almost correct.  Webster defines it as paper items (like posters, broadsides, and tickets) that were originally meant to be discarded after use but have since become collectibles.  So technically the framed certificate from Kansas City honoring Dr. Somebody (I’ll get up and go look at his name later…) for his 365 days of Continuous Flight back in 1920 (I think), really doesn’t count as Ephemera since it probably wasn’t meant to be discarded.  I received his incredible Art Deco Silver Trophy as a gift  and the certificate was just part of the auction deal.  I also got his photo album showing lots of historical flights and plane crashes from the early 1920′s.

Contemporary Family Photo

Throw in a picture of my son to bring us up to current society and I love it !  Oh, and the “Mantel” itself is just a flea market find that I placed on our porch in front of some french doors that never get opened.  This way it gives me an opportunity to practice decorating :) How did I do? Donating to Charities : Save Money with Coupons

Recently I told you about my Simple Service Project for All You Magazine and Champions for Kids.  I used coupons to reduce the cost of my Easter Basket Donations and then donated the purchases to a local charity of my choice.

I had chosen Community Connections of Jacksonville to provide food and fun items for thementrance to community connections to stretch their Easter dollars to their resident children.  Previously the YWCA, Community Connections is a Critical Resource for Jacksonville women and children.

Easter Basket of Surprises

When you donate, you should think outside the box (or basket).   I was asked to provide $25 worth of products to my charity but to maximize my dollars spent, I needed to buy products that were on sale and that matched up to high value coupons to save the largest percentage of money.  Once I did my coupon matchups and studied my All You Magazine, I all you magazine dealsshopped for products that you might not necessarily find in a child’s Easter Basket.  After talking with the staff at CC, I was sure they didn’t want children to have candy to help them bouce off the walls.  Instead, I thought outside the box and bought:

  • 2 Planters Peanut Butter
  • 2 bags of Pretzel Crisps
  • 2 bottles of Renu Contact Lens Solution (travel size)
  • 2 10pks Minute Maid juice boxes (10 pk.)
  • 1 Kiss Brand Nail Art
  • a bunch of plastic youth size clothes hangers ( I had these from cleaning out my son’s collection)
  • a hair band I had bought but never used.

After coupons they only cost me $15.38 – a savings of 42% just by using coupons.

My Delivery was outside the box too!

To make sure that the Girl items like headbands and nail art gets to the correct gender of child, I decided to donate the items in bags and the staff will actually make the decision of which items will go in which child’s basket.  This way, we can also make sure that a child that is allergic to peanut butter isn’t going to get Planters in their basket.  I went ahead and made up the basket at my house first just so I could photograph it for you.

Many of the women and children that live at Community Connections are victims of domestic violence.  Because of this victimization, it it extremely important to protect the anonymity of the residents.  So I did not get pictures of presenting the products to a family to protect their identity. Here is a picture of me with my special delivery to the staff and they will take care of presentation on Easter.  I know they will enjoy it :) couponing for a cause with all you magazine

What Cause will you Champion?

I was recently asked by All You Magazine and Champions for Kids to do a Simple Service Project using coupons and then donating the purchases to a local charity of my choice.  Sounds right up my alley!

Before I retired, I volunteered a lot and was at one time even the Philanthropy Director of Executive Women International of Jacksonville.  As Philanthropy Director, I organized a monthly event for our women to give back to our community.  One charity that we did many service projects for was Community Connections of Jacksonville.  Previously the YWCA, Community Connections is a Critical Resource for Jacksonville providing:

Since I had worked with them before, Community Connections was a natural choice for my charity.  Their needs are great especially since Government Funding and Private Funding have been reduced in our current economy.

Never Pay Full Price

Did you know that you don’t have to pay full price when you donate products to your local charities?  They won’t ever know how much money you spent out of pocket, so you should never pay full price if you don’t have to.  Your charity dollars can stretch even further when you can get items for a reduced price.  I was asked to provide $25 worth of products to my charity so I decided to make a nice little Easter Basket for a child at CC.

The first thing I did was study several websites to see this week’s coupon matchups to sale products for Wal Mart and check out this month’s issue of All You Magazine.
all you magazine subscritption
This week I was disappointed that there was not anything for *free*, but happy there were still many deals to be had.  Coupon Matchups to Current Sale products are extremely important for savvy shopping.  Couponing sites (like my own) will provide you with where to find the exact coupon as well as tell you what price you should expect to pay.  Sunday Newspapers and Printable Coupons are your typical coupon sources, but you can also find lots of coupons in All You Magazine.  All You is found only at Wal Mart or by subscription.  If you are a serious couponer you’ll want to get a subscription.  If you end up buying it on the news stand it is only $2.49!  When is the last time you bought a magazine that only cost $2.49 ?  (tip :  the subscription price is even cheaper!)

What’s in your Easter Basket?

I know it is Easter, but these children probably don’t need any extra sugar to help them bounce against the walls.  So I decided to be somewhat non-traditional! I did not find any coupons in this month’s All You that I wanted to use for this Easter Basket, but it was  full of other coupons that I will use later.  So after carefully studying the coupons and the sales, I decided on two of each of these products which would make up my $25 :

Hubert’s Lemonade, $1.69
B1G1 FREEHubert’s Lemonade printable
$0.75/1 Hubert’s Lemonade printable coupon
$0.47 each after coupons!

Planters Peanut Butter, $2.98
$1/1 Planters Peanut Butter Coupon
$1.98 ea. after coupon!’

Pretzel Crisps and flavor: $1.98
Use $1/1 Pretzel Crisps printable coupons
Total: $0.98

Renu Contact Lens Solution (travel size), $1.47 ea.
$2/1 Renu Fresh Contact Solution printable coupon
FREE after coupon!

Minute Maid juice boxes (10 pk.), $2.98
$1/1 Minute Maid juice box (10 pack) printable coupon
$1.98 after coupon!

On these printable coupon websites you may print 2 coupons per item by using your back button after the first one prints.  If the back button doesn’t work, then you can still get your 2nd print by going back in and selecting the items again.

As with most best laid plans … I had to alter my list a little.  My Wal-mart did not stock the Hubert’s Lemonade so luckily I had printed some other coupons just in case for some fun Kiss brand Nail Art.  I always try to print coupons when I see them because they could be there one minute, and gone the next.  Manufacturer’s may only have a certain number of prints available per coupon and once that is depleted they pull those printables and replace them with new coupons.

How much did it cost?

Here is my total before coupons :

and then I used all my coupons for “Couponing for Good”

total came down to:

Rustic Chocolate-Cinnamon Bread Pudding Easy Recipe with Kraft #cbias

College Football Championship Recipe to please all your Linebackers !

When planning party food for your Football Season everyone thinks about the old standby Pizza and Wings.  We can order those in easily enough.  I say easy because that is what I love.  E A S Y.

Every night Google figures out what is for dinner.  Sure fire hit recipes for what you have already in stock in the pantry result from a quick google search.  If I have pork chops and peanut butter then I’ll simply google “pork chops” “peanut butter” and I always add “easy recipe” to the search. With kids running around, errands to run, I never profess to be Chef Julia Childs, heck I don’t even pretend to be Chef Jessica !  I want E A S Y.

So cut to the football game, The wings and pizza have been ordered but  whats for dessert?

Google to the rescue!  No, I didn’t google this one, because actually Collective Bias sent me to http://www.kraftrecipes.com for a Football Party Shoppertunity. They asked me to share with you how easy it is to whip up some Homemade Chocolate Bread Pudding that will keep those football fanatics satisfied.  And so the story goes… err I mean recipe…

Ingredients

1/2 cup (1/2 of 8-oz. tub) PHILADELPHIA 1/3 Less Fat than Cream Cheese
1/2 cup  packed brown sugar
2  egg whites
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1-3/4 cups fat-free milk
6 cups cubed whole wheat bread (6 to 8 slices)
2 squares BAKER’S Semi-Sweet Chocolate, coarsely chopped

How To Make this Easy Chocolate Bread Pudding

HEAT oven to 350°F.

BEAT reduced-fat cream cheese and sugar in large bowl with mixer until well blended. Add egg whites and cinnamon; mix well. Gradually beat in milk until well blended.

PLACE bread in 8-inch square baking dish; top with chocolate and cream cheese mixture.

BAKE 30 to 35 min. or until center is set. Cool slightly.

There you have it.  Easy Peasy Chocolate Bread Pudding

Preparing to make this treat was easy also !

  1. I looked thru the Kraft Recipe website and decided what my football freaks would enjoy.
  2. I printed out the easy recipe and easy printable shopping list right from Kraftrecipes.com.  The selection of recipes ranges from breakfast, lunch, dinner, holidays, game day food, tailigating, and many more!  So many are very easy that I am going to have to bookmark it instead of searching google every night.  I can trust that these are time tested and taste good !
  3. Of course I always search online for any promotional coupons or offers that I can save money with. There always seems to be Kraft printable coupons available.
  4. I usually don’t shop at Food Lion.  I don’t really know why, because it is the closest grocery store to me.  Since I was in a hurry, I just ran in there to get all my ingredients for the bread pudding.  I started to think, why don’t I go here more often?  It’s only 1.8 miles from the house !
At Food Lion
  1. I had already printed out my shopping list directly from Kraftrecipes.com and checked the pantry for everything I already had.  SO, I scurried down the aisles with list in hand.  The store was much neater and cleaner than I had remembered.  And unlike where I normally shop, I got a great parking space so I could get in and out easily.
  2. Once I was there I only had to pick up some Philadelphia brand Cream Cheese, Eggs,Wheat Bread and some Bakers Semi-Sweet Chocolate.  Everything else I already had in the pantry.  However, while I was there, Chef Jessica called and I asked her how she makes her bread pudding and she said she adds a little INSTANT COFFEE and Vanilla Extract to hers to jazz it up a bit. Yes, INSTANT Coffee ! ha !  So, I quick put some International House into the cart to give it a try !  I already had my vanilla, cinnamon, milk and brown sugar waiting on me at home.

Making it was even easier !

Eating it was the easiest !

(thanks to Mr. Peterson)

I also created a  Google + Story here which gives you all the photos of the drama that happened in my kitchen ! (or lack there of …)

Monster, CareerBuilder, Indeed, LinkedIn – Unemployed in TX, but still optimistic!

After being booted from JCPenney and my office on April 13, 2011 . . .

The mousey gray walls of my cube were transformed with

wrapping paper from

THE CONTAINER STORE

Did you even know they carry wrapping paper?

Yes, they do and it is delightfully different!

…Life has certainly changed since April 13, 2011, when I was escorted to HR and told my position had been eliminated, along with about 5,000 others JCP Associates since January all across the country. I had worked for JCPenney for 8.37 years; at least that is what they told me! Unemployment Stinks !

Interviews so far include:

  1. An urban residential holding company (A part of the Crowe family of companies)
  2. A very upscale commercial design firm (Beautiful Offices)
  3. A global restaurant firm (Looks to be loads of fun mixed in with work!)
  4. A trading card company (Old product, but making new strides in today’s market)

Placement firms where I have signed up with are too many to count. If you know the Dallas area, the DFW metroplex encompasses 9,286 square miles of total area, and then you know I’ve put enough mileage on my car to circle the earth at least 5 times!

great dane dogMy best friends now are; Monster, CareerBuilder, Indeed and LinkedIn. They have replaced my dog, Nitro, for carrying on many conversations during the long days scouring the internet for that one perfect job. He doesn’t seem to mind too much as long as he can plant himself under foot. He sure is a GREAT Dane.

But my bestest friends are those that have kept in touch (you know who you are) and continue to be my rock during this rocky time . . .I couldn’t resist the pun.

When I do go back to work, I will put together my helpful hints to finding a new company to use all your brain power, expertise and experience.

Helpful Hint #1: Workforce Texas told me not to put more than 10 years experience on my resume . . . even though I look so much younger than my age, you can still tell, I probably have a little more experience than 10 years, especially if I haven’t “washed that gray right out of my hair” in a while!
